NED is NEC

NED is a well known, and hoped for, acronym among cancer survivors. No Evidence of Disease is the desired CT scan outcome. It does not imply a cure. NED simply means, for the moment, we take a breath. NEC is an invention of my own, and describes my van, “NED.” No Evidence of Comfort. This is a cargo van. Sitting in its belly, I stare at metal walls, roof and supporting ribs. At some point, NED becomes a cozy 60ish sf. “studio on wheels.” But, it is a process. I leave in a few days, and the hope is to have NED, at least its roof, insulated. A temporary bed platform hopefully spans the wheel wells. A propane heater warms me. A beach chair cradles me. My prized possession, a gift from a Bend friend, is a van-sized marine toilet. What a find! One less thing to worry about when out in the middle of nowhere or parked at a Walmart parking lot. So, I do have “all the comforts of home,” just a tad down-sized! It is, after all, my new normal!
